About

This is a toolkit I made because it would have been useful to have before I assembled it myself. It is a collection of conceptual instruments and high-signal lenses for locating yourself and others inside complex systems. You will still have to figure the world out. I hope the structure, method, language, and ideas here boost you along.

I think there are young people who can understand complicated things; people who already know all this and lack a shared language; and people for whom finding the questions already asked is the help.

I chose the name Athena for myself as a kid because it resonated. As a mom I felt a new urgency to hold a cohesive world-understanding. At the same time I was learning, as a matter of necessity, how to decenter my husband and recenter myself. When I put an idealized Athena-as-Mom at the center of my map and cast around for a worldview that could hold, I found that building one conceptual container for everything I could ever understand was the wrong job. The useful job was instruments: ways to examine the world, and to build, maintain, and navigate a cohesive understanding of it without requiring the picture to be finished.

Athena as a mom still needs exploratory contact with culture — not as decoration, as working surface — so she can interpret what she sees and move in a way that stays internally coherent. This site is that counter space.

How the kit is built

Three layers, meant to be used as a set rather than read as a book.

Lenses are the standing picture of the field. Eldritch Mundane is the larger pattern-field and why some configurations hold while others drain. Symbiote Framework is nested exchange: a person, a household, a collaboration, each both a whole and a part. Aegis is the quiet coherence work that keeps a local reality from shearing — including the kind that looks like ordinary mothering (Pillowfort Aegis).

Tools are what you pick up when something is off. What is a Pattern? is the first move: instance versus repetition. Opening Gates is for the moment two maps stop being the same map. Power Dynamics is whose picture is allowed to update. Generative vs Extractive Patterns is for load that gets misread as a broken bond. Completeness Defense is the reflex that treats a gap in the story as a defect in the person who named it. The rest of the Tools section is more of that: orientation hardware, not a finished doctrine.

Method is how hidden structure gets visible. Almost-Person’s Cycle is the extraction move. Examples is the same work at household resolution. Story References is the decoder for the old stories the other pages lean on.
